David G. Klein, MD, MBA, is the Chief Executive Officer of MarinHealth, an award-winning, full-service independent nonprofit health system in the San Francisco Bay Area. With over 30 years of dedicated experience, first, as a general surgeon for 14 years, Dr. Klein brings an impressive track record marked by a strong vision and demonstrated financial performance that has transformed underperforming hospitals into financially sound, thriving organizations.

Under his vision and leadership, Dr. Klein’s strategic initiatives have fueled MarinHealth’s revitalization and sustained growth. With an emphasis on leveraging strategic partnerships that deliver high quality and an improved overall health experience, Dr. Klein has driven growth through expanded access to patient care, bolstering MarinHealth’s status as the county’s preeminent healthcare system, extending its reach into communities throughout the entire North Bay.

Since joining MarinHealth, the organization has begun to realize the benefits of implementing these strategies. In addition to impressive growth, MarinHealth has garnered a remarkable number of industry awards and accolades, including “Best of the Best” Gold recognition for “Best Hospital” and “Best Birth Center” from Bay Area Parent Magazine; multiple 5-star Healthgrades performance ratings; and a Healthgrades ranking that positions MarinHealth within the nation’s top 10th percentile for cardiology services for a second consecutive year.

Before joining MarinHealth, Dr. Klein fostered innovation and growth, resulting in a financial turnaround to profitability, as President and Chief Executive Officer of Dignity Health’s two San Francisco-based hospitals: Saint Francis Memorial Hospital and St. Mary’s Medical Center. Prior to Dignity Health, Dr. Klein served as President of the Baylor Scott & White Health All Saints Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas. Under his leadership, the hospital received numerous accolades for service line excellence and overall quality, including top hospital rankings from US News and World Report.

Dr. Klein is the Chief Executive Officer of the Marin Healthcare District Board. He also serves on several boards, including the California Hospital Association, the North Bay Leadership Council, and as chair-elect of the Hospital Council of Northern and Central California, where he previously served as chair of the San Francisco Marin section of the Hospital Council. He is an active member of the San Francisco Marin Medical Society and board member of the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce and District Hospital Leadership Forum. Dr. Klein has also held numerous community board positions with prominent organizations, including the American Heart Association, March of Dimes, American Cancer Society, and the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce.

Dr. Klein graduated from the University of Southern California and earned his medical degree from the University of New Mexico. He also holds a master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of California, Irvine.
