Newcomers & long-time Sonoma County physicians join Annadel Medical Group; practice grows by seven in Santa Rosa & Petaluma, expanding access to primary & specialty care

Newcomers & long-time Sonoma County physicians join Annadel Medical Group;  practice grows by seven in Santa Rosa & Petaluma, expanding access to primary & specialty care

Seven more physicians, ranging in specialty from primary care and psychiatry to general and trauma surgery, have joined the Annadel Medical Group, bringing the total number of providers practicing with the group to 43.

The local physician group, which partners with the St. Joseph Heritage Healthcare medical practice foundation and St. Joseph Health System, continues to be joined by established physicians in Santa Rosa and Petaluma, while also recruiting physicians from outside the area to practice in both communities.

In addition to trauma surgeon Dr. David Russell (details below) who recently began to practice in Sonoma County, the following physicians will start seeing patients as part of Annadel Medical Group in January and February 2012:

  • Nicholas Strange, DO, Family Medicine, who will join two veteran Petaluma primary care physicians – Paul Umino, MD and David Sisler, MD, formerly partners in the El Rose Medical Group – thereby expanding family practice availability in Petaluma. Dr. Strange is completing a three-year residency in Family Medicine at Aultman Hospital, an 814-bed hospital in Canton, Ohio. His experience also includes emergency medicine training at a Level I trauma center, Akron General Hospital, and completion of his degree at the Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Iowa. Dr. Strange is fluent in Spanish and is board certified in family medicine.
  • Mounir Belcadi, MD, Psychiatrist, who for five years has served as medical director of North Bay Psychiatric Associates in Santa Rosa. Dr. Belcadi’s expertise includes care of patients with attention deficit disorder, depression, bipolar disorder, and other mental health conditions. He attended the Faculte de Medecine Mohammed V in his native Morocco, and completed residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. Along with his partner in private practice, Jon G. Jackson, MD, Dr. Belcadi will continue caring for his local patients, while also consulting with his new colleagues at Annadel and rounding at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital to increase access to much-needed psychiatric care.
  • Jon G. Jackson, MD, Psychiatrist, a private practitioner of outpatient psychiatry with North Bay Psychiatric Associates since 2010. Dr. Jackson chairs the Numina Center for Spirituality & the Arts in Santa Rosa and formerly served as Chief of Inpatient Psychiatry at St. Helena Hospital and with Sonoma County Mental Health. He has published or taught on topics ranging from prenatal and postpartum depression to seasonal mood disorders, geriatric psychiatry, psychopharmacology, and anxiety disorders. As with his partner, Dr. Belcadi, Dr. Jackson will continue to treat his established patients and will provide psychiatric care at Memorial Hospital for inpatients with mental health needs.
  • Elpidio C. Mariano, MD, FACS, General Surgery, of Petaluma, who has been in private practice for 28 years. Dr. Mariano has served three terms as chairman of the Department of Surgery at Petaluma Valley Hospital. His medical and surgical education began at the University of Santo Tomas in his native Philippines, followed by post-graduate residency training and subsequent academic faculty appointments at UMDNJ-RobertWood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey.
  • Cesar P. Veluz, MD, Thoracic, Vascular and General Surgery, of Petaluma, who has been in private practice here since 1979. Dr. Veluz has served multiple terms presiding over the Petaluma Valley Hospital medical staff and as chief of general surgery at the hospital. He graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine and in addition to post-graduate internship and residency training in the Philippines, also trained at hospitals in Baltimore, M.D., Philadelphia and Los Angeles. He has been recognized among “Top Docs” in patient satisfaction at Petaluma Valley, based on patient surveys.
  • Melissa Strange, DO, Pediatric Hospitalist, will join the pediatric hospitalist team at Santa Rosa Memorial in early February. She recently concluded a general pediatric residency at Akron Children’s Hospital in Akron, Ohio, and earned her degree at the Des Moines University Medical School in Iowa.     Dr. Strange also speaks Spanish.
  • David Russell, MD, Trauma Surgery, joined the Level II Regional Trauma team at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital in September after finishing a fellowship in surgical critical care at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He earned his medical degree from Albany Medical College and completed his residency in general surgery at the University of California, San Francisco-Fresno. He formerly practiced general surgery in Klamath Falls, Oregon, where he also taught at Oregon Health Sciences University.

Annadel Medical Group President Dr. David L. Smith said he welcomes this latest influx of physicians into the group, both for the benefit they’ll provide to local patients and because it enhances the organization’s ability to integrate multi-disciplinary care throughout Sonoma County and the region.

“It’s exciting for the Annadel group to add respected, experienced physicians who are well known to people in our communities along with these new physicians who, by relocating here, will expand patients’ access and choices in both primary and specialty care,” Smith said.

Smith noted the importance of expanding Dr. Belcadi’s and Dr. Jackson’s roles to include routine rounding on hospitalized inpatients, due to gaps Sonoma County has suffered in availability of psychiatric care.  After joining Annadel, the psychiatrists also will provide outpatient services in Petaluma at one of the group’s existing offices on West El Rose Drive.

“Their expertise will broaden our impact in meeting mental health needs for inpatients who are acutely ill or dealing with chronic disease, complementing the outpatient work these doctors and St. Joseph Health System’s own Outpatient Behavioral Health Services team have been doing in the community for years,” Smith said.
