Autodesk expands in Marin

After vacating some headquarters space in Marin over the past several years, software maker Autodesk Inc. (NYSE: ADSK) is regaining some of its local presence.

The San Rafael-based creator of 3-D design software dominant in the construction industry, which is making significant inroads into movies and television via computer-graphics and animation tools, has extended and expanded a lease for headquarters office space. That comes as the company also made a much larger expansion of its San Francisco presence.

In June, Autodesk signed a lease for the entire 47,000 square feet office building at 3900 Civic Center Dr. in San Rafael, committing to space the company previously occupied there and had made available for sublease.

“In conjunction with our plans for expansion in San Francisco, Autodesk continues to build on our 30-year history in Marin by expanding our headquarters in San Rafael,” said Michael Oldenburg, a spokesman. ”We currently have approximately 1,000 employees in San Rafael and have agreed to lease another 15,000 square feet, allowing us to continue to attract the Bay Area’s best talent.”

Also in June, Autodesk leased another 108,000 square feet of office space in San Francisco, bringing its footprint there to more than 250,000 square feet. Autodesk has about three dozen job openings each in San Rafael and San Francisco. 

Autodesk started in Mill Valley in 1982 then expanded to Sausalito and San Rafael. The company went public in 1985. It now has about 7,500 employees worldwide and rang up $2.2 billion in revenue in fiscal 2012 from more than 12 million commercial users and 50 million-plus consumer users.

Steven Leonard and Trevor Buck of Cassidy Turley represented 3900 Civic Center owner Broadreach Capital Partners in the extension-expansion lease deal with Autodesk.
