BloodSource and Sonoma Raceway will team up to give blood donors a once-in-a-lifetime experience at the 14th annual verihealth High-Speed Blood Drive at Sonoma Raceway on Monday, May 5.
Community members and race fans alike can enjoy the ride of a lifetime and help save lives at this one-of-a-kind blood drive, which will be held from 1-6 p.m. at the raceway. In true high-speed fashion, the raceway will put its own “spin” on the traditional blood drive, as donors get their hearts pumping with a high-speed “hot lap” around the 12-turn road course before giving blood. Donors will ride along with a professional instructor from the Simraceway Performance Driving Center in an official raceway vehicle.
BloodSource supplies nearly every drop of blood used in more than 40 hospitals in over 30 counties – from Merced to the Oregon border, from Sonoma County to Lake Tahoe, but this marks the first time it will team up with the raceway on this special event. Since 2001, the High-Speed Blood Drive has generated nearly 1,200 pints of blood, and each pint can be used to save up to three lives.
“From all my years in the military, I’ve donated many, many pints of blood,” said Fairfield’s Robert Upton, a retired US Air Force Master Sergeant and past donor. “Usually I get a t-shirt, but today I got a hot lap, which was special.”
To make an appointment to donate blood at the raceway, go to www.bloodsource.org/drives and enter location code D301. All donors must be at least 17 years old (or 16 with parental consent) and bring a valid photo ID. For more information, contact Laurence Lea at email@example.com or 800-870-RACE(7223).
