Marin County Fire Department has installed four fire detection cameras on Marin peaks to more quickly identify and handle forest fires. The cameras use mathematical algorithms to detect subtle changes in the landscape, and they differentiate smoke from fog. The cameras can alert the Marin fire departments of growing fires early on so firefighters can better determine how to react.
Marin Deputy Chief Mark Brown says that recently, four fires in remote areas have evaded detection. The cameras will monitor Mt. Tam, Mt. Barnabe, Big Rock Ridge, and Point Reyes Hill 24/7 to supplement the volunteer-only fire watch. The cameras were funded by PG&E.
