Algebra Academy Programs

Education is North Bay Leadership Council’s (NBLC) top public policy priority because North Bay communities need a high caliber workforce, civically-engaged residents, and to be economically competitive. The Algebra Academy Program is a partnership between employers and school districts. The program focuses on helping English-learning students increase their college and career readiness, and interest in pursuing STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) majors. Studies show that students who take algebra are more likely to go to college and have brighter career opportunities.

The Algebra Academy Program gives students a chance to explore careers, connect the importance of higher education with these careers, and gain confidence that people believe in them and are cheering for them to achieve their dreams. Students go to a variety of work-sites to spend time with scientists, engineers, financial experts, designers, and other professionals. The professionals share how they use math and science in their work and showcase careers that require these skills.

The goal of the Academy is to help jumpstart students’ interest in and knowledge of algebra, as well as other math and science-related topics.  This knowledge will do more than improve their academic achievement – it will connect the dots for them on why learning algebra is a linchpin for college and career readiness.

There is a paid teacher who works with the students every day for about two hours and then the students work with and visit with workplace professional from the host organizations for about 90 minutes.  Participating companies each host the students for 1 - 5 working days and provide the students with lunch before their departure.
